Pikes Peak South Fact Sheet: Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project

Company/Alliance: Husky Energy Inc and CO2 Solutions

Location: Husky Energy Saskatchewan, Canada

Feedstock: Natural Gas fired Boilers

Size: 15 t/day

Capture Technology: Post-combustion amine capture. CO2 Solutions capture technology

CO2 Fate: Potential EOR

Timing: Start (early 2015); Complete (3rd quarter 2015)

Scale Up: None

Motivation/Economics:

Cost of the project is $12.132 million.

In July 2012, Husky garnered $2.955 million to run the pilot from the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC), which invests penalty dollars from Alberta’s big greenhouse gas emitters in low-carbon technology development.

Part of the funding for the project will be received from the Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII) program

Comments:

Initially, the plant will capture 15 tonnes a day of CO2, but CO2 Solutions is hoping its will lead to commercial-scale projects that could scrub more than 150 tonnes a day of CO2 from gas-fired boilers at Pikes Peak South. Husky produces about 37,000 barrels a day of crude from thermal heavy oil projects in the area, and is also looking to expand that to 55,000 barrels a day.

The project will also incorporate HTC’s proprietary and patented SRS Solvent Reclaimer System™. The SRS System has been designed to remove the impurities from mixed and formulated solvents used to capture CO2 and in turn reduces solvent replacement requirements, lowers energy costs, minimizes plant maintenance and reduces waste disposal
