Daqing Fact Sheet: Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project

Company/Alliance: Alstom and China Datang Corporation

Location: Daqing, Heilongjiang province and Dongying, Shandong Province, China

Feedstock: Coal

Size: Daqing: 350 MW (1Mt/yr )
Dongying: 1000 MW
(1Mt/yr )

Capture Technology: Daqing: Alstom's oxy-firing technology
Dongying: Undecided

CO2 Fate: EOR in nearby oil fields

Timing: Daqing's Final Investment Decision (FID) to be taken in 2015. Pre- feasibility studies and exploration and appraisal for storage site are also expected to be in 2015.

Dongying: Exploration and appraisal of the storage site is expected to start in 2020.

Motivation/Economics:

The adjacency to oil fields of these projects provides a convenient and cost-effective condition for CO2 transport, utilisation and storage.

Comments:

The Chinese government has vowed to reduce CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 40-45% by 2020 from 2005 levels, following its promise for a 20% cut by 2010. The two demo projects will pave the way for large-scale CCS deployment in China and help the government in honoring its commitment.

Alstom signed an agreement in November 2011 stating that it will carry out the study for the 350 MW oxy-combustion CCS demonstration project located in Daqing.

The Dongying project will choose one of Alstom's carbon capture processes either: oxy-firing, chilled ammonia or advanced amines
