Project: Citronelle
Company/Alliance: SECARB, Denbury, Southern Energy
Location: Citronelle Oil field, Mobile, Alabama
Start Date: 2011 (3 year project)
Size: 0.1 to 0.25 Mt/yr
CO2 Source: CO2 will be supplied from CO2 capture at the Plant Barry, Alabama, via a 10 mile pipeline connecting the sites
Storage: Saline stacked Paluxy Formation reservoir at 9,400 feet deep and 1,100 feet thick
Motivation/Economics:
In December 2009, the US Department of Energy awarded the project $295 million – for an 11-year CCS contract – from the third round of its Clean Coal Power Initiative as part of its drive to fast-track the development of clean coal technologies and CCS at commercial scale. Southern has not provided an estimate of the overall project cost. However, early estimates suggest a further $350 million in addition to the CCPI award.
Comments:
Denbury owns the mineral rights and will secure the pore space at the Citronelle saline injection site. SECARB will monitor the CO2 injection. For more information on the Plant Barry capture please click here.
The proposed saline reservoir is in between oil fields on the southern flank of the Citronelle Dome. It is a proven 4 way closure and there is no evidence of significant faulting or fracturing. Multiple confining units between potential injection targets and base of the underground source of drinking water. The target formation is the Paluxy Formation at 9,400 feet deep and 1,100 feet thick.
