Project: Hydrogen Power Abu Dhabi (HPAD)
Company/Alliance: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and BP
Location: UAE
Feedstock: New build natural gas power plant
Size: 400 MW (1.7 Mt/yr)
Capture Technology: Pre-combustion
CO2 Fate: EOR
Start: 2018
This project has been placed 'On Hold'. Masdar is now focusing on the Emirates Steel Industries (ESI) project.
Motivation/Economics:
Increase Oil Production. UAE's oil reserves are rapidly decreasing, an EOR project will increase production.
The project is proposed to cost US$2-3 billion.
Comments:
The Masdar Initiative was launched in 2008 to deliver Masdar City, the world's first zero-carbon sustainable city. $15 billion is coming from the Abu Dhabi government for the project. Included in this venture is the plans to build large-scale CCS projects. Originally partnered with Hydrogen Energy, but now only with BP after Rio Tinto pulled out of the project, in December 2009, quoting that "it wanted to concentrate its energies on the CCS project in Kern County California (HECA)". The Masdar City is designed to have initially 50,000 people living on the site, with eventually facilitating a population of 100,000.
In February 2009 Masdar announced that the CCS project was being delayed a year due to undisclosed technical issues. The FEED study was completed in 2010 and the EPC was tendered for in March 2011. A final investment decision is waiting to be made. A pilot CO2 injection of 60 ton/day was started at the end of 2009 to test carbonate reservoirs for CO2 EOR.
