Entrada Fact Sheet: Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project

Company/Alliance: SWP (South West Partnership). New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Universoty of Utah, Schlumberger, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Location: CO / WY, USA. Exact location TBD.

Start Date: La Veta: Characterization (2008), Injection and MMV Operations (2008-12), Post injection MMV (2013-17).
Green River: Injection (2009)

Size: Total: 2.1 Mt/Yr La Veta: 1 Mt/Yr (4 years). Green River: 0.1 Mt/Yr (1 year).

CO2 Source: La Veta: Gas-Processing . Green River: Power plant Capture.

Storage: Brine reservoir: Entrada Formation

Motivation/Economics: Initial Estimate of capacity of the Entrada Saline reservois.

Comments: Southwest regional Partnership (SWP) is part of the US regional partnerships. This project recently received funding from the Department of Energy (Oct 2007). The SWP region emits over 350 MT CO2/yr which relates to 20 billion tons over a 10 year period. The SWP is researching into the capacity of the regionally extensive Jurassic Entrada sandstone.
This project is testing the capacity of the Entrada sandstone at 2 locations: La Veta, south-central Colorado is the main injection site and the Green River Basin, Wyoming, a smaller test site.
Both of these areas are sites of active petroleum generation which means that the amount and quality of characterization data is fairly good.
